The painting
This painting – like many of my others – has been stashed away in my studio waiting for me to finally come back to it. I never felt like I'd gotten these girls' color right (they were either too white, too creamy, or too brown colored). So, the other night I decided I would just paint them all gray and start over.
The reason I did this was to get back to the basics to study and correct the paintings values that I had muddied up by over-working it. Usually I have a 3 day rule: if I don't feel like where a painting is heading, I'll scrap it. However, I think this one has some potential, so I'm giving it some extra time.
A nifty trick I've found that helps with getting correct values is to use these red tinted glasses. They block out the colors so you can focus on the light and dark parts of the painting on a scale of white to black. You want your value balanced in order to create depth and spatial illusions.
Now that I've reset my values, the fun of coloring in the lines can begin! Stay tuned to see the finished product :)
